Gotta love this Jorge Cham’s annotated email that I just had to repost it. So true right??
We all experienced this: Sending an email to someone we really need a response ASAP and all we get is this familiar auto-reply — practically telling us that “hey, I’m not working today, so screw you!” It’s the middle of the work week and surprisingly, I am getting a lot of these today — where are all the clients?! The frustrating thing about working with some people is that when there is a problem in the office and they are not informed, they get frustrated — but if you DO email them, it seems like they are always on freakin vacation. It’s either they have unlimited vacation leaves or they are just too lazy to turn off their autoresponder. I am annoyed either way.
Anyway, I am going on a vacation next week and I thought of changing my OOO to this:
I am currently out of the office for vacation.
I know I’m supposed to say that I’ll have limited to no access to my email and won’t be able to respond until I return – but that’s not true. I have my smartphone with me and I can respond if I need or want to.
But the thing is, I rarely go on vacation and I would like to disconnect, get away and enjoy my time off as much as possible. So, I’m going to experiment with something new. I’m going to leave the decision in your hands:
• If your email truly is urgent and you need a response while I’m on vacation, please resend it to email@example.com and I’ll try to respond to it promptly.
• If you think someone else in the company might be able to help you, then feel free to email my assistant (firstname.lastname@example.org) and she’ll try to point you in the right direction.
Otherwise, I’ll respond when I return.
LOL. But of course I could never have the guts to actually do this. Maybe when I intend to resign, who knows, haha.
Anyway, what about you, what does your out-of-office email look like? Share it to me by hitting the comments below!
Have a productive Wednesday geeks! 🙂
