Mommy Porn? (My Not-So-Review of the Fifty Shades Trilogy)

I first heard of Fifty Shades of Grey around first week of May through my good friend Candy while I was shopping for new books to read. All she told me was it’s an erotic fiction “but it wasn’t gross and the protagonist is adorable!” I didn’t know then that it’s getting too much attention in North America, I laughed when my friend Jed told me his dad bought the book in Canada not knowing what it’s about! Well, if you look at Book 1’s cover art, nobody would think it’s all about sex! Anyway, I needed a new good novel to start with so I picked up a copy.

As of today, the book is now on it’s 13 STRAIGHT week at the New York Times Bestseller list, closely followed by it’s two sequels Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed. Bookworm or not, I am pretty sure that by now, you must’ve read or at least heard about it. So what is all the hype about this trilogy, why is it so damn popular, and why should you care?

Dubbed as “mommy porn,” E. L. James’ trilogy centers around the romance between Christian Grey, a billionaire sadomasochist, and Anastasia Steele, a college grad who’s a naive virgin. The first book spans in just a few weeks, and is already full of vanilla sex and an “introduction” to S&M. Due to the popularity of the book, I heard that several adult toy stores in the US have increased their sales by over 50% because fans flocked to stores to get themselves a couple of benwa balls, blindfolds, handcuffs, massagers and bondage bars (just some of the toys you will encounter in the book). Clearly, the kinky adventures of the hot billionaire and the newbie has inspired people to explore their sexual fantasies!

If you’re the kind of person who prefers to see rather than read erotica, not to worry. Universal Pictures has reportedly bagged the rights to make it to a full-length film. There are a lot of speculations as to who gets to play the lead roles, such as Robert Pattinson (no sorry, not hot enough for me, lol), Zac Efron (too young I think), Ryan Gosling and Christian Bale, but I personally prefer The Vampire Diaries stars/real-life couple Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev to play Cristian and Ana.

Anyway, my thoughts? The sex is HOT. The BDSM is interesting, but admittedly, by the second book I am already skipping the “ooohs” and “aaahs” part, lol. And while the author wrote it as fanfiction for the vampire chick-lit Twilight, it is something totally new (at least for me). And even though Christian Grey is a freak sadist who has a “Red Room of Pain” in his home, I cannot help but still love the character and follow his journey to overcoming his dark past. I am excited how it’s gonna translate in the big picture, and as long as Edward Cullen isn’t playing Grey, then I’ll be on the first opening day.

What about you? Have you read 50 Shades of Grey? What did you think?
